Where conservation and ranching work as one

A legacy of land, care, and stewardship.

Since 1974, Mountain House Ranch has stood on the rugged edge of the Callahan Divide—land shaped by buffalo migrations, Comanche history, and the early settlers who passed through the Buffalo Gap. What began as a family ranch has evolved into a serene nature preserve dedicated to preserving the native plants, wildlife, and water sources that make this part of West Texas unique.

Mountain House Ranch is a privately owned nature preserve and working ranch located in Buffalo Gap, Texas, within the ecologically diverse Callahan Divide. The ranch exists to conserve and restore native West Texas habitat, protect regional wildlife populations, and preserve the natural and cultural resources historically associated with this landscape.

As a land stewardship organization, Mountain House Ranch manages its acreage through responsible grazing, habitat protection, and sustainable water management. The ranch’s spring-fed waterways, grasslands, and brush ecosystems support a wide range of native species, including migratory birds, pollinators, and region-specific flora and fauna. These resources guide the ranch’s conservation priorities and long-term ecological planning.

Mountain House Ranch also maintains limited ranching and land-use operations—such as controlled hunting access, private fishing, and small-scale cattle management—to support the financial sustainability of the preserve. Each activity is conducted with strict adherence to conservation principles and is designed to minimize impact on the land and wildlife.

The mission of Mountain House Ranch is to ensure that this unique West Texas environment is protected, managed responsibly, and preserved for future generations. Through ongoing stewardship, ecological monitoring, and careful land management, the ranch seeks to maintain the integrity, biodiversity, and historical character of the Buffalo Gap region.

Mountain House Ranch remains a place where the land is left to speak for itself—honest, resilient, and distinctly West Texas.

Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord… It is the Lord Christ you are serving.

Colossians 3:23–24
